Roberto Brunilati communicates that 'the earrings were advertised for Bergdorf Goodman, without indication of the maker, in Town and Country, December 1940, as 'whispering of good and evil' which is particularly appropriate if they are worn as earrings'. See now Brunialti, American Costume Jewelry - Art and Industry (2008) Vol 1, p. 241 for these details.
