Reference: Patents are reproduced below (scroll down); designer Adolph Katz, dated 1945. These pins are a competitive response to similar 1943 Trifari pins (see TKF96). Brunialti, American Costume Jewelry, pp 119, 120, explains (with reference to the Trifari pieces) that they are based on keepsake wool or silk figures given by the French to infantry departing for the front in World War I, reviving the tradition in the next war
